Be Still and Know

Scripture: Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

Devotion:

In Psalm 46:10, we encounter the profound call to "Be still, and know that I am God." This scripture is both a command and a comfort. The imperative verbs "be still" and "know" serve as divine instructions for our lives, urging us to cease our endless striving and trust in God's sovereignty and strength.

The directive to "be still" invites us to stop our frantic activities and quiet our hearts. This is a radical call to surrender our efforts and recognize our limitations in a world that glorifies busyness and self-reliance. It is a reminder that our efforts, no matter how well-intentioned, are insufficient without God's intervention. The psalmist encourages us to step back, pause, and rest in the assurance that God is in control.

To "know" that He is God is to acknowledge His supremacy and omnipotence. It means to trust in His promises and to believe in His providence. This knowledge is not merely intellectual but experiential; it requires us to live out our faith by depending wholly on Him. By commanding us to "know" Him, God invites us into a deeper relationship where we can witness His power and faithfulness firsthand.

This verse also carries a prophetic declaration: "I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth!" It assures us of God's ultimate victory and the global recognition of His sovereignty. As we obey the command to be still and know, we are participating in this grand narrative of exaltation. Our stillness and trust are acts of worship that exalt God above all else in our lives.

Let us heed the call to be still and know in moments of chaos and uncertainty. Let us lay down our burdens and lean on God's everlasting arms. For in our stillness, we find strength; in our knowing, we find peace.

Prayer:

Lord, how hard we find it to simply let go of our situations and rely on you. May we always keep these commands in the forefront of our minds. May we learn to rely on your strength and care to bring about conditions that bring about peace and harmony in our lives. May we glorify you because you care for us deeply because you created us. Please help us to learn to depend on you for what we need. Amen.
