Seek Wisdom
Scripture:
Proverbs 2:1-5 (ESV)
My son, if
you receive my words
and
treasure up my commandments with you,
2 making your ear attentive to wisdom
and
inclining your heart to understanding;
3 yes, if you call out for insight
and
raise your voice for understanding,
4 if you seek it like silver
and
search for it as for hidden treasures,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and
find the knowledge of God.
Devotion:
We
in the western church just celebrated Easter. The true story of how God took
back the earth for his rule from the devil. Yet the polls show fewer and fewer
people, even believers, actually believe in his bodily resurrection. Fortunately,
God’s kingdom has never been, is not now, nor will it ever be run by popular
opinion. A king rules his kingdom and he owns every square inch of it. So, what
does all this have to do with the scripture quoted above?
Much
of the reason the world is turning away from the Christian religion is the fact
that the fools are in charge of this earthly domain. I am not saying that every
person who is in power now is a total fool. What I am saying is that they
ignore God’s commands, statutes, and ordinances at their own peril. Many trust
in advanced degrees and head knowledge to run their daily lives. They misapply their
supposed knowledge as wisdom and seek all to run the world according to this
false wisdom.
The
writer of proverbs urges his son to treasure his words of wisdom. The words
that are spoken here a good place to begin to know the things of God. God, in
himself, is unknowable by our finite minds. However, we can gain insight into God’s
thoughts by reading and applying God’s words in our lives. The writer, traditionally
Solomon, urges his son to seek after God’s wisdom with all his energy.
We
know that when God gave Solomon as a young man anything he wanted. Solomon
asked for wisdom. So, it can be for us today. We live in a country of
unbelievable wealth and civic freedom. Yet we are bitterly divided over issues
of race, gender, and sexuality. Why all this division? I claim that is because
we as a country that has forsaken the wisdom of God for our own pseudo-wisdom.
Everyone does what is right in their own eyes. Not thinking or caring about the
consequences.
In
this Easter season let us repent of our foolish pursuit of things falsely called
wisdom. Turn our eyes on the risen savior and learn from him the ways of God
that make for peace. Let us pray now for King Jesus to come and rule in each of
our hearts.
Prayer:
Lord
thank you for sending your son Jesus to die for our sins and yet live for us to
have eternal life. Thank you for the wisdom to know that the benefits of Jesus
life are not only for some distant eternal destination, but are ours to claim
right now. Forgive our foolish pursuit of man’s wisdom and cling to the eternal
truths of your word. We pray for your blessed return to come soon. Amen.
