Devotion:

As we begin Holy Week celebrations in the Christian church, we need to be reminded of just what holy week means. This scripture passage sums up the theme of the week concisely and forcefully. Before the advent of Christ and his atoning work on the cross and resurrection all people were subject to the law of sin and death. The Jewish cultic sacrifices were not able to save a person from their sins. We were held in bondage to the law of sin and death, and we were really without hope in the world.

When Jesus came and gave his very life for us on the cross and his later resurrection from the grave frees us from the sin and death that reigns in the world. Paul is emphatic in these verses that we can and will suffer no condemnation from the work of sin and death in the world. We have been set free to live a life not of license to sin, but a life of joyful obedience to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Satan who is called the accuser of the brethren cannot condemn us. Indeed, there is no power in heaven or on earth that can level any charge against us.

At the great judgement day Jesus himself will stand as our defense attorney declaring that all the accusations leveled against us by the flesh, the world, and the devil have been forgiven and we are free from all their accusations. Set free from the law of sin and death is a wonderful privilege that we as Christian’s enjoy. No more are we to walk around in anxiety and fear that our sins will somehow catch up with us and condemn us. We are declared free and holy by God himself and can walk in new life in him.

May we keep these words in mind as we approach this holy week of celebrations. From the dejection of Good Friday to the Joy of Easter day let us be thankful and joyful people. Secure in the knowledge that Christ has rescued us from our former bondage to sin and death. Let us celebrate our new life and freedom that comes in the promise of Easter morning. Let us praise God for his wonderful gift to us in this season.

Prayer:

Lord, we lift your name on high during this week of preparation for the celebration of our freedom from the wages of sin. Death no longer lurks as a secret enemy of all people but has been exposed in the empty tomb as a defeated enemy. Open our lips and let us proclaim a loud hosanna! Our Lord really does show abundant love and freedom. All glory, laud, and honor to you our redeemer king. Alleluia, Amen.
