Press On
Scripture: Philippians 3:12-14
(NIV)
Not that I have already obtained
all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of
that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not
consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting
what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal
to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Devotion:
Life is a journey filled with ups
and downs, victories and setbacks. In Philippians 3:12-14, the apostle Paul
gives us a powerful reminder: none of us has fully arrived yet. Despite all of
his accomplishments, Paul admits he is still a work in progress, just like us.
He writes, “Not that I have already obtained all this... but I press on to take
hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” Paul’s humility is
striking. He doesn’t dwell on his past or become complacent; instead, he is
determined to keep moving forward.
Paul teaches us an important
lesson: we must not let our past define us. Whether it is past successes or
failures, regrets or glories, these should not keep us from pursuing what God
has ahead. He encourages us to “forget what is behind and strain toward what is
ahead.” This doesn’t mean we ignore our past, but rather, we refuse to let it
hold us back. The Christian life is one of continual growth, of daily surrender
and renewed purpose.
The ultimate goal for Paul—and for
us—is to “win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ
Jesus.” Our reward isn't earthly recognition but the upward call of Christ: a
life lived for Him, becoming more like Him, and ultimately being with Him
forever. Every day is an opportunity to press on, trust God with our future,
and let go of what holds us back.
Today, ask God to help you let go
of the things behind you and give you strength for whatever lies ahead. Trust
that Christ has taken hold of you for a purpose. No matter where you are in
your journey, keep pressing on. The best is yet to come.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to press
on. Help us to win the race and obtain the prize of eternal life in your son,
Jesus. May our lives be examples of those who have sold out to You. May we be
faithful and steadfast in our love toward You, others, and even ourselves.
Glorify Jesus through all we do, taking hold of the great salvation that awaits
us in heaven. Amen.
