Be Kind to One Another

 Be Kind to One Another

Scripture Reading (NIV)
Proverbs 12:25 — “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”

Devotion

Anxiety is no stranger to the human heart. It creeps in quietly, often uninvited, and settles like a heavy fog over our thoughts, emotions, and even our physical well-being. Proverbs 12:25 speaks directly to this burden: “Anxiety weighs down the heart.” The Hebrew word for “weighs down” evokes the image of something being pressed or bent low under a great load. It’s a vivid picture of what worry does—it saps our strength, clouds our judgment, and isolates us from hope.

But the verse doesn’t end there. It offers a remedy: “a kind word cheers it up.” In contrast to the heaviness of anxiety, a kind word is light, uplifting, and healing. It doesn’t erase the problem, but it changes the atmosphere. A kind word can be a gentle encouragement, a reminder of God’s promises, or even a simple “I’m here for you.” It’s the power of grace spoken aloud.

This proverb reminds us that our words carry weight. They can either add to someone’s burden or help lift it. In a world where anxiety is rampant—from financial pressures to health concerns, from relational struggles to spiritual doubts—kindness is not just nice; it’s necessary. And for believers, it’s a calling. We are invited to be bearers of good words, messengers of hope, and encouragers in the name of Christ.

Jesus himself modeled this beautifully. He spoke peace to storm-tossed disciples, healing to the broken, and forgiveness to the condemned. His words were never careless; they were intentional, restorative, and full of truth. As followers of Christ, we are called to speak likewise—to let our words be seasoned with grace and aimed at lifting the hearts of those weighed down.

If you’re feeling anxious today, take heart. God sees your burden and offers comfort through His Word and His people. And if you know someone who’s struggling, consider what kind word you might offer. It could be the very thing that helps them stand a little taller and breathe a little easier.

Prayer
Gracious Father, You know the weight that anxiety places on our hearts. You see the silent struggles and the restless thoughts. Thank You for the reminder that a kind word can bring joy and relief. Help us to be people who speak life—who offer encouragement, truth, and hope to those around us. And when we ourselves are burdened, remind us to turn to Your Word, where comfort and peace abound. May our hearts be lifted by Your promises and our mouths be instruments of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
