I Wait For The Lord

 I Wait For The Lord

Scripture: Psalm 130:3-6 (ESV)

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word, I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

Devotion:

Waiting is one of the most difficult spiritual disciplines for many of us. In our fast-paced world, we are conditioned to expect instant answers and immediate results. Yet, Psalm 130:3-6 teaches us a profound lesson about waiting on the Lord with hope and trust.

The psalmist acknowledges the depth of human iniquity when he says, “If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” He paints a picture of a God who sees all and knows all, yet chooses to forgive and to love. This forgiveness is not only a source of awe but also the foundation for hope.

The act of waiting described in this psalm is not passive or filled with despair. Instead, it reflects an active, longing anticipation—much like a watchman who yearns for the first light of dawn after enduring a long night. The psalmist repeats the phrase “more than watchmen for the morning” to emphasize the intensity of this hope. Just as the morning is a certainty following the night, so too is the Lord's faithfulness in responding to those who wait upon Him.

In our seasons of waiting—whether for answers, direction, or healing—we are invited to turn our gaze toward God. We are called to trust in His word and His promises, resting in the assurance of His forgiveness and love. Waiting on the Lord refines our faith, deepens our dependence on Him, and aligns our hearts with His timing.

Let us find hope in the certainty of God’s goodness, even as we wait. For in the waiting, we grow not only in patience but in intimacy with the Lord.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, in the moments when waiting feels hard and uncertain, help us to trust in Your timing and promises. Teach us to wait with hope, like watchmen for the morning, trusting in Your unfailing love and forgiveness. May our hearts find peace in Your presence as we place our hope in You. Amen.
