Teach a Wise Man

Scripture: Proverbs 9:9-10 (ESV)

          Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;

teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

            10          The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,

and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Devotion

            Today, let us consider a proverb. These sayings form an important part of our scriptures. However, they are often overlooked by modern readers because they are seen as meant for a different age. When we look closely at them, we find that their meaning is not dated but strikingly applicable to our current times. In the scriptures God promises that he will give wisdom to all who ask for it, and He will give wisdom generously to those who ask. Therefore, let us take a few minutes to consider the proverb above and see what we can learn.

            The proverb above is written about wise and righteous people. Fools as we learn in other proverbs do not take instruction well. It does not benefit them. However, the wise person is open to learning new things. Those who are righteous likewise are teachable. How then can we be wise and righteous? The book of proverbs promises that all who study what is written here will make one wise and discerning. As for being righteous being in right relationship with God through Jesus means that we have a righteousness given from above.

            As verse 10 says those who fear the Lord are on the path to wisdom, and those that seek to know the Lord will be blessed with knowing Him. This verse repeats and amplifies the thought found in Proverbs 1:7:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools despise wisdom and instruction. (NIV)

            Note the contrast between the wise and the fool in these proverbs. Wisdom is seen as leading to good things in the Lord. Foolishness is a source of ruin for those that choose that path. Let us, therefore, choose to walk in the way of the wise and righteous. While being wise does not mean that we will never experience hard times, being wise makes the hard times bearable. Fools on the other hand will always experience the reward of their foolishness. Let us pray for wisdom and understanding.

Prayer:

            Heavenly Father we come to you asking for wisdom. Let us know your ways that we may walk in them. Help us to always follow our Savior Jesus. Do not let us be led in the way of the foolish. Grant us knowledge of the kingdom that we may always rejoice in you. Amen.
