Praise God for His Unfailing Love

Scripture: Psalm 33:1-5 (NIV)

Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;

it is fitting for the upright to praise him.

Praise the Lord with the harp;

make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.

Sing to him a new song;

play skillfully, and shout for joy.

For the word of the Lord is right and true;

he is faithful in all he does.

The Lord loves righteousness and justice;

the earth is full of his unfailing love.

Devotion:

            When we think of the book of Psalms, we may get different ideas that come to mind. It seems that there are psalms for every occasion. It is true that this collection of songs and poetry was composed for many different reasons, over a long period of time (nearly 2,000 years) and reflected almost every situation that could happen in life. Today’s psalm is mainly a hymn of praise to a God who has been very good to his people.

            It speaks of a God whose words are always fitting to the situation. A God in whom there is no deceit or guile. It calls upon the musicians to compose new melodies for every kind of instrument to be prepared for the praise of God. It is a picture of what we hope heaven is like all the time. Not that we think we will be floating on celestial clouds playing harps all day, but rather like a never-ending improvisational praise session with each person and angel playing their part. Lifting up songs grander and more beautiful than we can imagine here on earth.

            It is my belief that in heaven every creature will have something positive to contribute to God’s praise. There will be no out-of-tune voices or instruments. The most average of tunes in heaven will put the hallelujah chorus to shame. But I think the sweetest tune of all will be the songs that Jesus sings to his redeemed people. Yes, even God will join in the praise session. Leading His children in worship. Who knows there may even be times when the Lord explains some passage of the Bible that we His children need to hear.

            Therefore, let all God’s children prepare to worship God. In spirit and in truth we will worship Him. The song of God will bring healing to the body, mind, and soul. We will be released from bondage to sin and shame and guilt will be no more. Let us rejoice along with the psalmist in the closing words of this psalm: Verses 20-22

20 We wait in hope for the Lord;

he is our help and our shield.

21 In him our hearts rejoice

for we trust in his holy name.

22 May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,

even as we put our hope in you
