And God Made Them

Scripture: Genesis 1:26-27 (ESV)

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27     So God created man in his own image,

in the image of God, he created him;

male and female he created them.

Devotion:

            This scripture has so much to teach us today it’s hard to believe it was written several thousand years ago. The creature called man were the only creation that God somehow had a discussion among the heavenly court. Humans were made in the image and likeness of God. What an amazing creation we are. Made just a little lower than the angels of heaven.

            Our creation was the pinnacle of God’s creative work. We were creatures with highly developed brains. Our bodies while not the largest, fastest, or fiercest animals in the beginning we somehow managed to band together and for communities with division of labor and we tamed fire, invented the wheel, and slowly grew in power and sophistication of technology that our friends in the rest of the animal kingdom were not able to compete with.

            We were created with two, and only two, sexes. Adam named all the animals in the world but saved a special name for his partner Eve. It was clear that from the beginning God intended these creatures would rule the world, but how were they to accomplish this amazing feat. The Bible makes it clear that God and Adam and Eve developed a close relationship. They walked with God, and they talked with God and learned how to run this magnificent planet.

            What are the implications for humans today that we can take away from this creation story? First, we are a special creation of God. God throughout the other six days of creation spoke a thing into being and there it was. From fruits to nuts, monkeys to elephants all things God created was good. Finally, God created humankind and gave us special survival skills so that we could populate the earth and bring it under our control. (More or less.)

            Tomorrow, we meet sin and its destruction of the earthly paradise that Adam and Eve were living in. The creatures most dearly loved by God would rebel and try to be “gods” themselves. And some of us are still clinging to the lie that we can be as God.
