Heal Our Blindness Lord
Scripture: Matthew
20:29-34 (ESV)
29 And as they went
out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. 30 And behold, there were two blind men sitting by
the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out,
“Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 31 The
crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more,
“Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 32 And
stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him,
“Lord, let our eyes be opened.” 34 And
Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight
and followed him
Devotion:
This scene above occurs just before
Jesus enters Jerusalem for his passion. One might think that Jesus would be wrapped
up in contemplation of the events that were about to happen to him in Jerusalem.
That he wouldn’t pay any attention to the blind beggars on the side of the road.
However, Jesus reveals his care and kindness towards those who need healing
even at this crucial moment in his ministry.
The two blind men for their part
show incredible faith in Jesus. They have heard about this miracle worker. They
are not to be silenced. They know the incredible things that Jesus has done elsewhere,
and they truly desire to have their sight back. Their faith in Jesus and their refusal
to be silent, secure for them the result they desired, and they could do
nothing else but follow Jesus as he entered Jerusalem to be with the one who
had healed them.
What does this story reveal to us
today. First and foremost, they show us that Jesus is never too busy to listen
to his children. Although he knows what we need before we ask. Jesus still
wants us to ask him for our daily needs. We should be like these blind men
insisting that the Lord of the universe listen to our daily wants and needs.
Many of us are like the blind men.
Only our blindness is spiritual not physical. We wander through our days with
no idea where we are to be headed spiritually. This whole world is living under
a spiritual darkness that prevents us from seeing what is the will and direction
God would have us move in. Let us not be ashamed to cry out for our spiritual
sight. We must pray that the clouds of spiritual darkness that have descended
on us will be lifted. Then we can see where God would have us go and what God would
have us do. Let us pray for spiritual sight:
Prayer:
Lord open the eyes of our hearts
that we may see what you would have us do. Let us be like the blind beggars in
the scripture who would not be denied the opportunity to receive their sight.
Let us keep our eyes open and ready to see the paths you have laid out for us.
Help us to walk in the way you would have us go. Following you just as the
newly healed blind man did. Glory to you for you are mighty to save us from our
blindness. Amen
