Treasure in Clay Jars

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:7–10 (ESV)

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.

Devotion:

In the ancient world, clay jars were the plastic containers of daily life: cheap, common, easily chipped, and thrown out when cracked. No one admired the jar. Valuables were sometimes hidden in them precisely because no one thought to look there.

Paul says that is exactly where God has placed His greatest treasure. In the verse just before, he names it: "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (v. 6). The gospel itself, the glory of God shining in Christ, has been entrusted to ordinary, fragile, sinful people.

Why this way? Paul answers: "to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." The vessel's weakness is not a flaw in God's plan; it is the plan. When the jar is plainly clay, no one mistakes it for the treasure. God's power is displayed through our frailty, so that He alone receives the glory.

Notice Paul's four contrasts. Afflicted, but not crushed. Perplexed, but not despairing. Persecuted, but not forsaken. Struck down, but not destroyed. Paul does not pretend the pressure is light. But in every line there is a "but," and God supplies it. He who began a good work in us will bring it to completion (Phil. 1:6).

We carry in our bodies "the death of Jesus" so that His life may be shown in us. United to Christ, believers share in both His sufferings and His resurrection power. Our trials are not wasted. They are the very place where the life of the risen Lord becomes visible.

Perhaps you feel your cracks this morning: your weariness, your doubts, your sin, your limits. Take heart. You were never meant to be impressive. You were meant to be a vessel. The treasure is Christ, and the power is His.

Prayer

Sovereign Lord, we confess that we are frail vessels of clay, and we thank You for entrusting to us the treasure of the gospel. When we are pressed, keep us from being crushed; when we are perplexed, guard us from despair. Teach us to boast in our weakness, that Your surpassing power may be seen and Your name alone glorified. Manifest the life of Jesus in our mortal bodies, and keep us to the end. In His name we pray. Amen.
