Love Me Obey Me
Scripture: John
14:23-24 (NIV)
Jesus replied,
“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we
will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will
not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the
Father who sent me.
Devotion:
These verses bring
us to the heart of Christian discipleship. Jesus does not separate love from
obedience, nor does He treat obedience as a cold duty. Instead, He shows us
that obedience is the natural expression of genuine love. To love Christ is to
treasure His words, to receive His teaching, and to shape our lives around His
commands. Love and obedience are not two different paths—they are one and the
same.
Jesus begins with
a promise: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word.” Notice the order.
Obedience flows from love, not fear. It is not the attempt to earn God’s favor
but the response of a heart already captured by His grace. When we love Christ,
His commands cease to feel burdensome. They become invitations—ways of walking
closely with Him, ways of reflecting His character, ways of living in the
freedom He gives. Love transforms obedience from obligation into delight.
Then Jesus adds
something astonishing: “My Father will love him, and we will come to him and
make our home with him.” This is one of the most intimate promises in all of
Scripture. God does not merely visit the believer; He dwells with him. He makes
His home in the heart that loves and obeys Christ. This is the fulfillment of
the entire biblical story—God dwelling with His people. Through the Spirit, the
Father and the Son take up residence in the believer’s life, shaping, guiding,
comforting, and transforming.
But Jesus also
speaks plainly: “Whoever does not love me does not keep my words.” He is not
being harsh; He is being honest. Disobedience reveals a deeper issue than
behavior—it reveals the absence of love. When Christ’s words are ignored,
dismissed, or resisted, it shows that the heart has not truly embraced Him.
Jesus is not interested in outward compliance. He desires inward devotion that
expresses itself in obedience.
This passage
invites us to examine our hearts. Do we obey Christ because we love Him, or do
we attempt obedience without affection? Are there areas where His words feel
heavy because our love has grown cold? Jesus calls us back to the simplicity of
discipleship: love Me, obey Me, and I will dwell with you.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to
love you more deeply and follow you more closely. We want to obey you, but our
sinful nature often gets in the way. Forgive our lack of love and free us from
our slavery to self, but lead us into obedience and life in you. Lord, we want to
make room for you and the Father to live in us. Help us to get out of the way
and let you dwell in our hearts. Amen
