There Is No Other
There Is No Other
Scripture:
Deuteronomy 4:39-40 (NIV)
Acknowledge and
take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth
below. There is no other. Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you
today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you
may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.
Devotion:
As Moses speaks to
Israel on the edge of the Promised Land, he is addressing a people who have
seen God’s works yet still wrestle with forgetfulness and fear. That tension
feels familiar to us. We, too, live between God’s past faithfulness and the
unknowns ahead. Into that space, Moses gives a clear, steadying word:
“Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above
and on the earth below. There is no other.” And then, “Keep his decrees… so
that it may go well with you.”
Moses is not
offering abstract theology. He is calling Israel—and us—to a settled
conviction. “Acknowledge” is not merely intellectual assent; it is a
deliberate, daily recognition of God’s unrivaled rule. In a world full of
competing voices, anxieties, and self‑made solutions, Moses presses us to take
to heart what is eternally true: the Lord alone is God, and His sovereignty
extends over every place we stand and every moment we face.
But Moses doesn’t
stop with confession. He moves to obedience. God’s commands are not burdens but
gifts—paths that lead to life, stability, and blessing. Israel’s future
flourishing was tied to walking in the ways of the God who redeemed them. Our
flourishing is no different. When we submit our choices, habits, and desires to
the Lord’s good commands, we are not earning His favor; we are living in
alignment with His design.
For people like us—seeking
faithfulness in a culture that often treats God as optional—this passage is a
needed reminder. We are called to acknowledge God’s absolute lordship not only
in worship but in the quiet places of our lives: how we speak, how we work, how
we raise our children, how we endure suffering, how we treat our neighbors. And
we are called to obey Him not reluctantly but gratefully, trusting that His
ways lead to what Moses promises: “that it may go well with you.”
Today, take to
heart that the Lord is God—and there is no other. Let that truth steady your
mind, shape your obedience, and anchor your hope.
Prayer:
Lord, you are God,
and there is no other. We confess these words are true, yet we so often act as
if we had never heard them. Help us to find the strength and courage to really
live out these words. Let us cling to the promises that in you we find
salvation and eternal life. May our lives be an example to the watching world
of what a difference you make in us. Lord, we glorify your name and worship you
because you ARE God and there is NO other. Amen.
