Love A Blazing Fire
Scripture: Song
of Solomon 8:6 (NIV)
Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.
Devotion:
Song of Solomon 8:6 is
one of the most powerful declarations of love in all of Scripture. Though the
book celebrates the love between bride and groom, it also reveals something
deeper — a glimpse into the nature of God’s covenant love for His people. This
verse lifts our eyes beyond human affection and invites us to consider the
fierce, unyielding, and holy love that comes from the Lord Himself.
The bride begins with a
request: “Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm.” In
ancient times, a seal represented ownership, identity, and protection. To be
sealed on someone’s heart meant to be cherished inwardly; to be sealed on their
arm meant to be honored outwardly. It is a plea for love that is both deeply
held and openly lived. Spiritually, it echoes the longing of every believer: to
belong fully to God and to have His love mark every part of life.
Then comes the
breathtaking declaration: “For love is strong as death.” Death is final,
unyielding, and inescapable — yet the love described here is just as strong. It
does not falter, fade, or retreat. It holds fast through every season, every
trial, every weakness. This is not sentimental love; it is covenant love. It is
the love that brought Christ to the cross, the love that conquered death
itself, the love that refuses to let go of God’s people.
The verse continues: “Jealousy
is fierce as the grave.” God’s jealousy is not insecurity; it is His
passionate commitment to protect what is His. He refuses to share His people
with idols that destroy them. His love is fierce because His desire for our
good is fierce.
For believers, this verse
serves as a reminder that God’s love is neither fragile nor uncertain. It is
strong, enduring, and fiercely protective. It seals us, holds us, and shapes us.
And because we are loved with such a love, we are free to love others with
courage, faithfulness, and grace.
Prayer:
Lord,
thank You for Your fierce and faithful love — a love stronger than death, a
love that seals us as Your own. Set Your love upon our hearts and shape our
lives by its fire. Teach us to love others with the same strength, purity, and
devotion that You have shown to us. Amen.
