Thanking God for You
Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 1:3
We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.
Devotion:
Paul’s words to the Thessalonian church resound with gratitude and encouragement. Here, he models the importance of recognizing God's work in the lives of others. As Paul writes, he’s not only expressing thanks for their existence, but for the visible signs of spiritual growth in their lives—their faith and love that are ever on the rise. This verse reminds us of the power of encouragement, the necessity of gratitude, and the beauty of Christian community.
In our own lives, it’s easy to overlook the quiet progress happening within us and those around us. Sometimes we’re so focused on what needs improvement or what’s missing that we fail to notice the fruit already growing. Paul’s example beckons us to pause and reflect: Who can I thank God for today? Whose journey of faith and love has inspired me, even if it’s just in small, everyday moments?
Notice that Paul doesn’t thank the Thessalonians for their achievements, but thanks God. The source of their growth is the Lord Himself, working in and through them. This observation shifts our perspective from self-congratulation to humble gratitude. It teaches us to look for evidence of God’s grace in our faith communities, families, and friendships. When we see faith flourishing and love multiplying, we ought to recognize it as divine activity, not mere human effort.
The growing faith and increasing love described in this passage are not static. They’re dynamic qualities—ongoing, developing, deepening over time. Christian life isn’t about reaching a plateau of spiritual maturity but about continually moving forward, trusting God to nurture us. Paul’s recognition of this growth encourages us to persevere. Even if progress seems slow, God is at work, tending to the seeds of faith and love He has planted in our hearts.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the people whose lives reflect Your growing faith and increasing love. Help us to encourage one another and to recognize Your work in our midst. May we never stop growing in faith, nor ever cease loving one another. Amen.
