Do This And Live Forever

Scripture: Luke 10:25-27 (NIV)

On one occasion, an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this, and you will live.”

Devotion:

In our bustling lives, it's easy to overlook the essence of our spiritual journey. Luke 10:25-27 reminds us of this profound simplicity. When an expert in the law queried Jesus about inheriting eternal life, Jesus redirected him to the core of the Scriptures: love. This dialogue reveals the heart of Christian living - love for God and love for our neighbors.

Imagine standing in that crowd, hearing Jesus challenge the expert to reflect on the Law. The expert’s response, quoting Deuteronomy and Leviticus, wasn't just an answer; it was an invitation to embody love in its fullest form. Jesus affirmed this, emphasizing action: "Do this, and you will live."

Loving God wholly demands more than ritualistic observance; it requires our heart's devotion, soul's commitment, mind's engagement, and strength's exertion. This comprehensive love transforms us, aligning our desires with God's will.

Equally, loving our neighbor as ourselves transcends mere acts of kindness. It calls us to see others through God's eyes, offering compassion, forgiveness, and support as naturally as we care for our own needs. This love breaks down barriers, fostering genuine community and reflecting God's kingdom on earth.

As we meditate on this passage, let's evaluate our lives. Are we loving God with every facet of our being? Are we extending that love to those around us, even when it's challenging?

Prayer:

Lord, help us reach out and spread your love to someone, anyone who crosses our paths today. May these words be more than symbols printed on a page; instead, let them become a way of life for us. May others glorify your name because of the testimony of our good works done out of love for you. May Jesus’ name be made famous by His disciples. Amen.
