Bible Believer?

Scripture: John 5:39-40 (NIV)

You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them, you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

Devotion:

In this passage, Jesus addresses the Pharisees, who were known for their extensive knowledge of the Scriptures. They believed their diligent study of God's Word would lead to eternal life. However, Jesus points out a critical flaw in their thinking: they missed the central message of the Scriptures – to lead them to Him, the source of true life and salvation.

The Pharisees were experts in the Law, spending hours upon hours studying and memorizing it. They took pride in their knowledge and adherence to the Scriptures, yet their hearts remained far from God. They failed to see that the Scriptures pointed to Jesus, the Messiah. Their focus on the letter of the Law blinded them to the life-giving relationship with Christ that the Law was meant to lead them to.

This passage serves as a caution to us today. It is possible to be well-versed in the Bible and know the Scriptures inside and out, but we miss the most crucial aspect of our faith: a deeply personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Knowledge of the Bible is essential, but it should never be an end in itself. The purpose of studying God's Word is to deepen our unique, personal relationship with Him, to know Him more intimately, and to grow in our love and obedience to Him.

We must guard against the temptation to become like the Pharisees, who relied on their knowledge and religious practices rather than on the person of Jesus. Our salvation is not found in our ability to quote Scripture or in our religious activities, but in our faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. It is through Him that we receive eternal life, not through our own efforts or knowledge.

As we meditate on John 5:39-40, let us examine our hearts. Are we relying on our own understanding and efforts, or are we placing our trust in Jesus alone? Let us approach the Scriptures with a humble spirit, seeking to know Christ and to be transformed by His Spirit. May our study of God's Word lead us to a deeper faith and a closer walk with our Savior, always remembering that we are but humble seekers of His truth.

Prayer:

Lord, help us to see beyond the words on the page and to encounter You in the Scriptures. May our knowledge of Your Word draw us closer to You and deepen our faith in Jesus. Forgive us for the times we have relied on our own understanding and efforts. Teach us to trust in You alone for our salvation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
