The Bad News and the Good News

Scripture: 1 Peter 1:24-25 (ESV)

24 for

       “All flesh is like grass

and all its glory like the flower of grass.

       The grass withers,

and the flower falls,

25    but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

Devotion:

In this passage, Peter reminds us of the transient nature of human life compared to the enduring word of God. The imagery of grass and flowers paints a vivid picture of our fleeting existence. Just as grass withers and flowers fall, our lives on earth are temporary and fragile. This reality can be humbling, as it strips away the illusion of our self-sufficiency and permanence.

Yet, Peter also offers a source of hope and assurance that starkly contrasts with the transient nature of our physical bodies and earthly achievements: the word of the Lord remains forever. It is eternal and unchanging, a steadfast foundation upon which we can build our lives, offering us reassurance in the face of life's transience.

This eternal word is the good news—the gospel of Jesus Christ that was preached to us. It is through the gospel that we find true and lasting life. While our earthly existence may be brief, the promise of salvation and eternal life with God gives us a perspective that surpasses the temporal nature of our current circumstances, reminding us of the enduring impact of our faith.

Reflecting on this passage, we are invited to examine where we place our trust and hope. Are we investing in the transient things of this world, or are we anchored in the eternal truth of God's word? Let us be encouraged to cling to the gospel, to draw strength and comfort from God's unchanging promises.

As we go about our daily lives, let us remember Peter's words and allow them to shape our priorities and actions. May we find peace in the knowledge that, despite the fleeting nature of our earthly journey, we have an everlasting hope in Christ. Let this hope inspire us to live faithfully, sharing the good news with others so they, too, may experience the enduring love and grace of our Lord. This is not just a suggestion, but a call to action, offering us comfort and security in His love.

Prayer:

Lord, in this passage, we find the bad news of our mortality contrasted with the good news of our salvation in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Help us not just acknowledge the bad news, but to live in light of the good news. Show us how to make our days count because of the brevity of our lives, recognizing that only what has been done for you will have value lasting to eternity. May we bring glory and honor to your name through our lives, living each day with the urgency and value that the good news brings. Amen.
