Jesus is Greater

Scripture: Hebrews 1:1-4 (ESV)

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

Devotion:

In the opening verses of Hebrews, we are reminded of Jesus Christ's supreme authority and majesty. This passage beautifully illuminates the transition from the old ways, where God communicated through prophets, to the new covenant, where He speaks directly through His Son. Jesus is portrayed not just as a messenger but as the ultimate revelation of God's character and purpose.

Verse 3 captures the essence of Christ's divine nature, describing Him as "the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature." This imagery underscores the unique and unparalleled role of Jesus, who not only reflects God's glory but embodies His very being. Jesus is not merely a reflection; He is the true light, manifesting God's holiness and power in a way that no other can.

Furthermore, Jesus' role in creation and His sustenance of the universe by the word of His power accentuate His divine authority. He is not a passive figure but an active, sustaining force in the cosmos, holding all things together with His powerful word. This same Jesus, who upholds everything, also took on the monumental task of purifying us from our sins. His sacrificial act and subsequent exaltation to God's right hand signify His victory over sin and death, affirming His superiority over all, including the angels, and giving us the assurance and hope of our own victory through Him.

Finally, let us recognize Jesus's greatness in every aspect of our lives. He is the eternal King, the perfect Savior, and the ultimate revelation of God's love and glory. May our hearts be filled with awe and gratitude as we meditate on His unparalleled excellence and authority.

Prayer:

            Heavenly Father, thank you for sending us your son, Jesus. We give you all the honor and praise for this gift that was so costly to you. May we glorify Jesus and proclaim His saving grace to all people. We desire so much to make His name great among all the nations. May we be preaching the gospel with our words and our very lives. Amen

  On October 31st, millions of Christians around the world celebrate Reformation Day, a commemoration of a pivotal moment in church history. It marks the day in 1517 when Martin Luther, a German monk and scholar, nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg.
