What Shall We Do?
Scripture Micah 6:8 (ESV)
8 He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord
require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
Devotion:
In the book of Micah, the prophet addresses
the people of Israel, calling them back to a life that pleases God. Micah 6:8
encapsulates the essence of God's expectations for His people in a simple yet
profound way. It is a call to action, a reminder of our spiritual duties, and a
guide for righteous living.
Justice is a central theme
throughout the Bible. It is not merely about adhering to laws but about
ensuring fairness and righteousness in our interactions with others. Doing
justice means standing up for the oppressed, fighting against injustice, and
ensuring that our actions reflect God's compassion. In our daily lives, it
calls us to advocate for the marginalized, seek fairness in our workplaces,
and treat everyone with dignity and respect.
Kindness, or mercy, is another
fundamental attribute of a godly life. It goes beyond mere acts of charity; it
is an attitude of heart. Loving kindness means showing compassion, forgiveness,
and empathy to others. It is about being patient, bearing each other's burdens,
and reflecting the boundless mercy that God has shown us. In a world often
marked by harshness and indifference, loving kindness sets us apart as
followers of Christ and brings light to those in darkness.
Walking humbly with God is perhaps
the most vital aspect of this triad. Humility before God means acknowledging
our dependence on Him, recognizing His sovereignty, and submitting to His will.
It is an attitude that eschews pride and self-sufficiency. To walk humbly with
God is to live a life of continuous communion with Him, seeking His guidance in
all we do, and striving to align our lives with His purposes. This constant seeking
of His guidance reassures us and guides us in our journey of faith.
As we reflect on Micah 6:8, let us
remember that these requirements are not burdensome. They are the outworking of
a heart transformed by the powerful love of God. When we do justice, love
kindness, and walk humbly with our God, we live out the gospel in tangible
ways. May this verse inspire us to live lives that honor God and draw others to
His grace and truth, filling us with hope and inspiration.
Prayer:
Lord
God Almighty, help us do what you require of us. Let us see past our
selfish ambitions and desires and focus on being conduits of your justice and
mercy to a lost and hurting world. Glorify your name through us. May we always
be found to be following you and not our own desires. Please help us to live a
life worthy of your holy name. Amen.
