Be Strong and Courageous*

Scripture: Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Devotion

Deuteronomy 31:6 is one of the most encouraging verses in the Bible. It says, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave or forsake you." Moses spoke this verse to the Israelites before they entered the promised land, a time of great uncertainty and fear. They were about to face powerful nations and armies that seemed unbeatable. But Moses wanted them to trust God's presence and power, even when facing such formidable enemies and challenges. He also wanted them to find comfort in God's unchanging faithfulness and love, even when they felt alone and afraid.

This verse is also relevant to us today. We may not face the same enemies and challenges as the Israelites, but we must still be strong and courageous in our faith. We live in a world that is hostile to God and his people. We face temptations, such as the pressure to conform to societal norms that contradict our faith. We face trials, such as the loss of a loved one or a job, that can test our faith. We face troubles, such as financial difficulties or health issues, that can shake our confidence and peace. We also have an enemy, the devil, who wants to destroy our relationship with God and our joy in him. How can we be strong and courageous in such a situation?

The answer is the same as it was for the Israelites: trusting in God's unwavering presence and power and remembering his unchanging faithfulness and love. God's faithfulness and love are not like human love, which can change or fade. His love is constant, enduring, and everlasting. He has not changed. He is still with us and will never leave or forsake us. He is still able to help us, protect us, and deliver us from any danger. He is still faithful to his promises and loves us with an everlasting love. He is our strength, courage, refuge, hope, God, and Savior. In this, we can find security and protection, knowing that we are never alone in our journey of faith.

So, let's not be afraid or terrified of anything or anyone. Let's not be discouraged or dismayed by any circumstance or situation. Let's not be ashamed or timid to share our faith and testimony. Let's be strong and courageous, knowing that God is with us and he will never leave us or forsake us. Let's say with the psalmist, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1) As you go about your day, reflect on these words and how they can guide your actions and thoughts. How can you be strong and courageous in your faith today?

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for your faithfulness to your people. Let us constantly be reminded that you are for us. There can be no foe that will triumph over us. Walk with us at all times, protect us from the evil one who seeks to destroy our lives. Lord, provide your assurance of your presence to comfort and strengthen us. Grant us victory by the power of the Holy Spirit, who dwells inside each of us, empowering us with strength and courage. Thank you, Lord, for providing a way of escape from our struggles and trials. In our prayers and trust in your presence and protection, we find empowerment and hope. Glory be to God, Amen.
