The Foundation Is Jesus

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.

Devotion:

With these words, Paul turns our attention to the most essential truth of the Christian life: everything begins and ends with Christ. He is not simply part of the foundation, nor one option among many. He is the foundation—solid, unchanging, eternal. Anything built on another base will eventually crumble, no matter how impressive it looks in the moment.

Paul’s imagery invites us to think about our lives as a construction project. Every choice, every habit, every act of obedience or disobedience becomes part of the structure we are building. Some materials are durable—such as gold, silver, and precious stones. These represent works shaped by faith, love, humility, and obedience. Other materials—wood, hay, straw—are flimsy, temporary, and easily consumed. These represent works done for self-glory, comfort, pride, or earthly recognition. The sobering truth is that both kinds of materials can appear similar from the outside. A life built on straw can look successful for a season. A life built on gold may look unimpressive to the world. But God sees the substance beneath the surface.

Paul reminds us that a day is coming when the quality of our work will be revealed. Not to shame us, but to purify and refine. The Day he speaks of is the day of Christ’s return, when all things hidden will be brought into the light of His truth. What was built on Christ will endure. What was built on self will not. This is not a threat but a gift. God desires that our lives be filled with what lasts—acts of love, faithfulness, sacrifice, and service that reflect the character of Christ.

This passage invites us to examine what we are building today. Are we investing in what is eternal, or settling for what is easy? Are we seeking God’s approval, or the applause of others? Are we constructing a life that will withstand the fire of God’s testing, or one that will vanish in an instant?

The good news is that Christ Himself is our foundation, and He is faithful. When we build on Him—through prayer, obedience, repentance, and love—our lives take on a strength that no storm can undo. May we build wisely, with hearts anchored in the One who laid the foundation with His own life, and who invites us to build something that will last forever.

Prayer:

Help us, O Lord, to build our lives on the firm foundation we find in Jesus Christ. May we reject the easy and cheap faith that is so popular in the world. Help us to dig into your word for the gold, silver, and precious stones to be found there. We want our lives to matter when you return. Help us always to take the long view and show ourselves to be people who rightly divide your word of truth. Amen
