Remain In Love

Scripture: John 15:9-10 (NIV)

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

Devotion:

These verses are not merely an invitation; they are a revelation of the deepest reality of the Christian life. Jesus is not offering a distant or abstract affection. He is describing a love that flows from the eternal relationship between Father and Son—a love without beginning, without wavering, without limit. And then He says something astonishing: that is the love with which He loves us.

To abide in that love is to remain, to dwell, to stay rooted in what Christ has already given. It is not something we earn or manufacture. It is something we receive and continue in. Yet Jesus ties this abiding to obedience—not as a condition for being loved, but as the natural expression of living within that love. Obedience is not the price of admission; it is the fruit of belonging. When Jesus says, “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love,” He is describing the way love shapes a life. Love leads to trust, trust leads to obedience, and obedience deepens our experience of love.

Jesus Himself models this. He kept His Father’s commandments and abides in His Father’s love. His obedience was not reluctant or burdensome. It was the joyful overflow of perfect communion. When He calls us to obey, He is not placing a weight on our shoulders; He is inviting us into the same joy, the same intimacy, the same freedom that He Himself enjoys with the Father. Obedience becomes a pathway into deeper fellowship, not a ladder we climb to earn acceptance.

In a world where love is often conditional, fragile, or transactional, Jesus offers something entirely different. He offers a love that existed before creation, a love that sustained Him through suffering, a love that conquered death. To abide in that love is to anchor our lives in something unshakeable. It means letting His words shape our desires, His ways guide our steps, and His presence steady our hearts. It means trusting that His commands are not restrictions but invitations into life.

Today, hear His voice again: “Abide in my love.” Let that be your resting place, your refuge, your identity. And as you walk in obedience, may you discover more and more the depth, the strength, and the beauty of the love that holds you.

Prayer:

Lord, may we take your word into our hearts. May we learn not to strive or worry but to rest in your love. Help us believe that we can stop working to earn your love and realize that your love for us is freely given to all. May we glorify your name, and, certain of your love for us, reach out to love others into your kingdom.
