Love The Lord

Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (NIV)

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Devotion:

Deuteronomy 6:4–5 is central to Israel’s faith and identity. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” These words were spoken to a people on the verge of entering the Promised Land, preparing to live out their covenant in a new place filled with competing voices and tempting options. Moses understood that what would sustain them was not military power or cultural influence, but a strong, unwavering love for the God who had rescued them.

The opening command, “Hear, O Israel,” is more than a call to listen. It is a call to pay attention with the whole self. In Scripture, hearing means obedience, trust, and alignment. God is not just providing information; He is shaping identity. The statement that “the Lord is one” reminds the people that God is unique, faithful, and entirely different from the gods of the surrounding nations. Their lives were to be focused on the One who had freed them from slavery, guided them through the wilderness, and committed Himself to them in steadfast love.

To love God with heart, soul, and strength means loving Him with all of one’s being. Heart refers to the inner life—desires, thoughts, and intentions. Soul includes the whole person, the very breath of life. Strength not only involves physical ability but also resources, energy, and capacity. This love is not divided or partial; it is wholehearted devotion that touches every aspect of life. It is a love shown in worship, obedience, daily choices, and the quiet shaping of character.

This command is simple and rooted in grace. God invites His people to love Him because He has already loved them first. Their devotion is a response to His faithfulness, not a requirement to earn it. In a world filled with distractions and pressures, this call remains as relevant as ever. Loving God with our entire selves reorders our priorities, steadies our hearts, and anchors us in a relationship that gives life meaning and direction.

Prayer:

Lord, as you gave these words to your people so long ago, may we accept them today. Give us the courage to live and love you with our whole selves. May we bring glory to your name by demonstrating this love for you in our daily lives. Lord, teach us your ways and lead us on the path of following your son Jesus. Thank you for loving us so much. Amen.
