Created For Good Works
Created For Good Works
Scripture: Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
For we are God’s handiwork, created in
Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Devotion:
The words of Ephesians
2:10 offer one of the most beautiful truths in all of Scripture: This single
verse gathers together identity, purpose, grace, and calling into a single, all-encompassing
promise. It reminds us that the Christian life is not an accident, not a self‑improvement
project, and not a desperate attempt to earn God’s approval. It is the
unfolding of God’s creative, redemptive work in us—work He began long before we
ever knew Him.
The word Paul uses
carries the sense of a carefully crafted work, something shaped with intention
and care. We are not mass‑produced or casually assembled. We are formed by the
hands of a God who knows exactly what He is doing. This is especially powerful
when read in the context of the preceding verses, where Paul reminds us that
salvation is entirely by grace. We are God’s, not because we have achieved
something, but because God has done something in us. He has taken what was dead
and made it alive. He has taken what was broken and begun to restore it. He has
taken what was lost and called it His own.
Paul then says we
were created in Christ Jesus for good works. These good works are not the price
of salvation but the fruit of it. They are the natural outflow of a life
touched by grace. When God saves us, He does not simply rescue us from
something; He also calls us into something. He invites us into a life that
reflects His character, compassion, justice, and love. The good works we are
called to are not grand achievements measured by the world’s standards. Still,
daily acts of faithfulness—kindness offered, burdens carried, prayers lifted,
forgiveness extended, truth spoken, and love embodied.
What makes this
verse even more astonishing is Paul’s final phrase: God prepared these good
works beforehand. Long before we took our first breath, God was already weaving
together the path of faithfulness He would invite us to walk. Nothing in our
lives is wasted. No season is meaningless. No act of obedience is unnoticed.
God is not improvising with our lives; He is guiding, shaping, and preparing us
for the very things He intends to accomplish through us.
Prayer:
Lord, we are so grateful that you have
saved us and given us a job to do here on this earth. Our lives have purpose
and direction based on the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus. Thank you for
the gift of your Holy Spirit, which gives us the energy and direction that
allows us to know your will for our lives. May we always seek to do that will.
Whether we are called to great things or to small acts of faithful love, let us
treasure your gifts to us. Amen.
