You Are Our Dwelling Place
Scripture: Psalm 90:1-2 (NIV)
Lord, you have been our dwelling
place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought
forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
Devotion:
Psalm 90:1-2 serves as a profound
reminder of God's eternal nature and His enduring presence in our lives. It
begins with a declaration that spans the entire breadth of human history:
"Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations."
These verses invite us to pause and consider the steadfastness of God, who has
been a refuge and home for His people across the ages.
The image of God as a
"dwelling place" evokes comfort and security. A dwelling place is not
merely a physical location; it is where one finds rest, peace, and belonging.
In a world that often feels transient and unsettled, this truth anchors us.
Whether in seasons of joy or hardship, God remains a constant presence—a
sanctuary where we can lay down our burdens and find solace.
Psalm 90:2 further expands this
reflection, grounding us in the eternal nature of God: "Before the
mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to
everlasting, you are God." This verse marvelously juxtaposes the grandeur of
creation with the Creator’s timeless existence. The mountains, often symbols of
strength and permanence, are but fleeting creations compared to the eternal God
who formed them. Here, the psalmist invites us to see beyond the finite and to
marvel at the infinite.
These verses also challenge us to
reflect on the fleeting nature of human life in contrast to God’s eternity. The
generations mentioned in verse 1 remind us of our mortality, yet they also
carry the assurance that God's faithfulness transcends time. From ancient
civilizations to modern-day societies, God has been unchanging. This truth is a
source of great hope: no matter how unpredictable or fleeting the circumstances
of our lives may be, God remains constant, unshaken by the passage of time.
As Christians, we are called to
dwell in God's presence not only through prayer and worship but also by
aligning our lives with His eternal purposes. When we make God our dwelling
place, we learn to trust in His promises, surrender our anxieties, and live
with the assurance that our lives are held within His everlasting hands.
Psalm 90:1-2 is an invitation to
rest in the unwavering presence of the Creator. It calls us to find our
identity and security in Him, knowing that He is our home, not just for today,
but for all generations and beyond. From everlasting to everlasting, He is God.
Prayer:
Lord,
thank you that in you we can find shelter from the world's madness. May we run
to you whenever we feel frightened or unsettled in any way. Thank you for
providing sanctuary in our time of need and distress. May we learn to lean on
you in all things, bringing glory to your name. Let us learn to rest in the
protection you provide. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
