God is Doing a New Thing
Scripture: Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)
“Forget the former things; do not
dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not
perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
Devotion:
Life often keeps us held back by
the weight of the past—its successes tempting us to settle or its failures
making us afraid to hope again. Yet, in Isaiah 43:18-19, God calls us to change
our focus. He tells us to "forget the former things" not because they
don't matter, but because they are not the final say. God is always guiding us
forward, shaping a new chapter full of purpose and promise.
See, I am doing a new thing!"
This statement is more than just an announcement; it is a call to notice. God's
new work often starts quietly, taking root in the unseen parts of our lives.
Just as a seed beneath the soil grows before breaking the surface, so God’s
plans unfold in His perfect timing. Our challenge is to see it—to open our
spiritual eyes and hearts to recognize His hand at work, even amid challenges
or uncertainty.
The imagery in this passage is
striking. A way in the wilderness? Streams in the wasteland? These phrases
point to the miraculous, the unexpected, and the life-giving. When we face
seasons that feel barren or directionless, we can trust that God specializes in
creating pathways where none exist and bringing refreshment where dryness seems
unending. His provision defies the limits of human reason and exceeds our
imagination.
But new things demand a response.
To embrace the "new thing" God is doing, we must let go of the old,
exercise faith, and step into the unknown with confidence in His character.
This is not a passive act but an active trust, based on the assurance that He
who creates rivers in deserts is also the One who walks beside us, always reliable
and trustworthy.
Today, reflect on your life. Where
might God be calling you to see His new work? Is He asking you to let go of
past hurts, embrace a fresh opportunity, or trust Him in an uncharted area of
your life? Take heart—His new thing is not just a possibility; it is already
beginning to happen. May we have the faith to see it and the courage to walk
boldly into His promises. As a practical step, consider keeping a journal to
record your thoughts and reflections on these questions. This can help you
track your spiritual growth and see how God is working in your life.
Prayer:
Lord,
help us keep our eyes open to the new things you are doing in the world. Let us
be receptive to new ideas, discerning good from evil. Help us to cling to you,
Heavenly Father, as we seek to follow your Son Jesus. Please help us proclaim
your word wherever and whenever we can. Let us lead others to follow Jesus and
receive the blessings of eternal life. Amen.
