Introduction to the Penitential Psalms
The
penitential psalms are a collection of seven psalms from the Bible,
traditionally attributed to King David, that express sorrow for sin and seek
God's mercy and forgiveness. These psalms—6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143—are
often recited during Lent and other times of penance and reflection. They offer
a profound insight into the human condition, acknowledging guilt, pleading for
divine compassion, and promising amendment of life. Revered for their emotional
depth and spiritual resonance, they remain a central part of Christian
liturgical and devotional practices. Let us begin with
Psalm 6. (NIV)

of David. Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.
Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am faint; heal me, Lord, for my bones are in
agony. My soul is in deep anguish. How long, Lord, how long? Turn, Lord, and
deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love. Among the dead, no one
proclaims your name. Who praises you from the grave? I am worn out from my
groaning. All night long, I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with
tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes. Away
from me, all you who do evil, for the Lord has heard my weeping. The Lord has
heard my cry for mercy; the Lord accepts my prayer. All my enemies will be
overwhelmed with shame and anguish; they will turn back and suddenly be put to
shame.
Devotion
on Psalm 6
Psalm 6 is a
heartfelt plea for mercy and healing. King David's anguish resonates deeply, as
he confesses his weakness and sorrow. The psalm reminds us that in moments of
profound distress when our souls are burdened and our tears plentiful, we can
turn to God and seek His compassion. David's cry, "How long, Lord, how
long?" echoes our own cries in times of suffering. Yet, amid his lament,
David affirms his trust in God's unfailing love. The assurance that "the
Lord has heard my weeping" offers comfort and hope, reminding us that God
is always attentive to our prayers. As we reflect on this psalm, let us embrace
its message of faith and resilience, trusting in God's promise to deliver and
heal us, no matter the depth of our pain.
