Psalm 11

if the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?” Psalm 11:3

Perhaps at no other time in the history of the United States of America have we lived in a time when we needed this word from God more than right now. We live in a time where the wheels of justice turn so slowly. Whether it is in the inner cities where we see a police officer or two take the law into their own hands, or when we see rioters burning buildings and tearing down statues and monuments seemingly at random. We are living in dark times. Our leaders are seemingly not up to the task of restoring law and order on the streets of some of our largest cities.
All while our country is facing a pandemic that is killing off our neighbors at an astonishing rate. Endangering our neighbors and ourselves with its deadly effects. It seems to pass quickly through the population. Many of whom are ignoring the guidelines set out by our government to help us stay safe. These folks believing their own freedom trumps safety for themselves and for others.
It seems that there is an attack on the very things that have served as the foundation for this great nation are under constant threat. We feel helpless against these forces. But we are not helpless. God is still in control. As he says in Psalm 11: 4 The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD’s throne is in heaven; his eyes see,” Not only does the Lord see us in our current state of turmoil, God has promised to be with us through any trial.  Whether it be civil unrest, pandemic, or other natural, or man-made disasters. our God is there providing comfort and assurance of God’s unending and unconditional love.
While God does not say that He will put an end to all of this suffering right away. We have his firm promise to be with us during the struggle and eventually to eradicate all sickness and violence. See Psalm 11:5 “The LORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.” God promises his help to his children, so we have nothing to be afraid of. God sees all of this chaos swirling around us and he is stronger than all the storms we face. Our part is just to wait for his divine action and then cooperate with it so that we can say with the Psalmist in 11:6-7 “  Let him rain coals on the wicked; fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup. 7   For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.
