Hope

Hope

Scripture Romans 5:1.5 (NRSV)

5 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

Devotion:

It seems that we are a fearful people these days. There is so much to be afraid of, whether it be climate disaster, an “invasion” of immigrants, natural disasters, etc. Our politicians trade on our fears. Paul in his letter to the Romans above says we should live in hope and not fear.

The world keeps telling us we need to be afraid. However, Jesus tells us to not be afraid: Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. (Matthew 12:32) The scriptures teach us repeatedly not to be anxious or afraid. Alas our human nature is inclined to fear. Many Christians are fearful. In some countries Christians are undergoing real persecution and fear for their very lives. In this country with all its religious freedom, even we can die or be injured by some individual influenced by Satan who brings a gun into worship and uses it.

We need to understand that our suffering whatever it may be is to be used to ultimately to produce hope in us. Paul says above that hope will not disappoint us. We can live into that hope because we can trust in Christ, not to eliminate suffering, but rather to be with us giving us the strength and endurance necessary to meet the suffering head on thus drawing us nearer to God through the action of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Prayer:

We come before you today Lord with many fears and anxious thoughts. Give us the endurance and the wisdom to abide in hope even when all seems lost. Refresh us with a new infusion of your Holy Spirit. Lift our eyes to you from whom our help comes. Show us how to help our suffering neighbor. Give us joy to worship you in spirit and in truth each day. Amen.
